Not buying a Switch 2 for a game I already played 29 years ago.

I fucking love Star Fox but it hurts to see the franchise rotting on the vine. I know Nintendo’s philosophy is that they only want to make a sequel if they can advance some new mechanics or hardware tech, and clearly they saw the mouse mode and 2-player co-op as the impetus to even make this in the first place, but god damn would I love to see a new story with the exact same gameplay.

Sometimes you just come up on a formula that works and you can let the writers take the wheel for a bit. Not every game needs to push the envelope in terms of graphics or mechanical complexity or never-before-seen gameplay loops.

Imagine they made a Star Fox game with flight mechanics similar to No Man’s Sky in the sense that there are missions that take you from planet side to space and onto another planet in one mission? They could do that on Switch 2, but instead we get a very very safe ie boring remake.

I have wanted a new Starfox game for so long. I wanted to be excited about this, but why are they remaking it AGAIN?!? 4 of the 7 Starfox games are the same fucking game! When people said they wanted a new Starfox game they meant they wanted a NEW Starfox game. If they wanted to do just a visual upgrade they could have just tweaked Zero and released it on Switch. I mean hell at least that game had new content. The franchise has so much potential and its so frustrating to see Nintendo be completely unable to innovate on this series. Fucking Konami managed to do a decent job for fucks sake. This is the only franchise of theirs that they are just completely incapable of creating something new for and its honestly baffling.

Most of the graphical changes seem… fine I guess. The characters faceplant right into the weird hyperrealistic uncanny valley tho.

I’m not sure them mentioning more dialogue and cutscenes makes me particularly excited. Seeing what they’ve changed and added in the trailer doesn’t inspire confidence, it feels like those joke AAA gaming tutorial things where they state the obvious in a hyper positive cheesy voice and maybe I’m just picky because its different, but here we are.

The multiplayer looks sort of neat, too bad I’d have to buy a switch 2, pay for Nintendo online, and suffer on Nintendo’s shitty servers to use it.

I’ll probably just stick to the recomp. My favorite part of the game is the gameplay, and that looks completely unchanged.

On one hand I’m glad they didn’t go with the overdone cutesy Disney style for the animals, but yeah Fox especially looks off in the kinda realistic style. He looks more like Fantastic Mr. Fox now.

Its not uncanny for me per se, but I don’t like their design either. In the Mario Galaxy Movie he looked fine–that is they did not change a thing expect for the high fidelity ofcourse. Which is fine, guess they somehow feel forced to do something with the design as its a remake. Really have to try the recomp though!

What’s up with Fox’s appearance tho? He looks like he’s cone out of retirement being overweight. Remaster doesn’t mean you have to have realistic visuals that alter from the style of the original.

Nintendo has had very few original ideas in a long time. They know they can just keep churning out remakes and sequels to their franchise library of Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Starfox, Pokemon, etc. and keep raking in the cash, so why change the formula?

People buy this shit, so there is no motivation to do anything else.

      [EDIT]

Wow. A lot of Nintendo fans really don’t like me saying this, apparently.

That’s genuinely not true. They’re actually infuriatingly devoted to only putting out games with new ideas. We don’t get regular sequels often because they wouldn’t deviate far enough from the previous one.

The spin for this new Star Fox is clearly the camera tie in, getting to basically be a vtuber in their chat system. It also utilizes mouse controls, a series first.

I mean…Zelda ToTK was basically “BotW, but better and with Garry’s Mod”.

Almost every Pokemon game has been the same formula, but with a few new things sprinkled in. Legends Arceus was one of the biggest departures in recent memory, but it was still a lot of the same, but 3D open world.

Mario Kart is 80% the same with maybe double carts, flying mechanics, etc. added in. This time they added a kinda sorta open world.

They change the formula a bit, but their innovation is usually leaving the base that works alone and adding a flavor packet.

TotK swapped out all the main abilities and made Gary’s Mod the main focus with the battery power being a new primary stat meter, so it does feel quite different. Also you have a full party fighting with you and two new maps to explore using lots of crazy machines.

Mario Kart 8 introduced tracks that go upside down and underwater, and gave kart customization. Mario Kart World made every track part of an open world map and made open world challenges. Sure the main gameplay is very similar, but it’s definitely not just Mario Kart 64 again and again.

Compare with something like Star Fox, F-Zero, Punch-Out, or Pikmin where the series just languishes until they feel they have a new enough spin to give it. Those games could have much bigger franchises if they changed their philosophy a bit.

Cool I guess. Nintendo doesn’t seem to know what to do with the franchise. They’ve remade SF64 twice now.

Am I the only one bothered by the fact Fox’s ears stick out of his helmet? I certainly wouldn’t wear headgear that left the most fragile and sticky-outy parts of my head exposed.

Also SF64 is basically a remake of the SNES game with some new mechanics from the scrapped SF2 game. And this Switch version is the third remake of SF64. Zero is a reimagining of SF64.

I think a lot of that is due to the genre of the game. I’m not sure what you can innovate with a rail shooter. There’s a video that argues exactly this. Can’t find it right now unfortunately but it talks about Star Fox as well as Katamari and Banjo Kazooie, basically great games that exhausted their entire premise after two installments, leaving nowhere else to go but down.

Sure if they want to adhere strictly to the SF formula. But if they let go of that they can push the franchise into a new direction. Like Nintendo did it with Zelda since the old LttP formula was rehashed too many times. Like they can add RPG elements like upgrading characters and ships and being able to change party members. Or procedural generation with rogue lite elements for example. Nintendo basically has zero imagination when it comes to StarFox, they could have at least created a new story line.

The two games I can think of that deviated significantly from the formula, SF Adventure and SF Assault, did not do well IIRC. I bounced off of Adventure because it felt like a Zelda clone, and I was like “but Nintendo already owns Zelda. If they wanted to make a Zelda game they can just make a Zelda game.” Now I want to replay it because I only recently learned it was made by Rare. Assault I really liked. It wasn’t as divergent as Adventure but tried new stuff.

The other problem, IMO, is like a lot of Nintendo games the characters and story are secondary to the gameplay, so I’m not really interested in what Fox and company are up to.

Also here’s a random factoid that I have nowhere else to put: Falco is actually a pheasant.

There are so many obvious things they could try. -New stages (imagine, a new level) -Differing weapon options/customizable ships (don’t even get me started) -Reactive galaxy map (ie: after each mission, Andross takes a “turn” and does something that changes missions or works toward his own win state) -Open world stages (would work great with the above, wherein, like 64, completing different objectives prompts a different path or different outcomes) -Multiple vehicle options for a single stage (Corneria in the landmaster, for example) -Squad control (ie: after you help out Bill, he can be sent to other planets to impede Andross’ actions away from where you’re going, or stay with you for extra gun support on your own levels) -Flight challenge stages, where there’s little to no shooting, but getting through without crashing is very difficult (allows blocking off weird routes so Andross doesn’t have to be everywhere, but a path can still be obstructed, as well)

And that’s just off the top of my head, and ignoring stuff they tried in, say, Assault

Star fox and rogue squadron were probably my top games for the n64. Diddy Kong racing was right up there with them, and mario tennis and shadows of the empire rounding out the top 5. I think that most of the people I knew with n64s were in agreement on the star fox game being one of the best.

We’ve demolished Diddy Kong Racing in the past couple of months. I have to say it’s one of the best racers of its time.

The amount of unlockable races, characters with actual different stats, boss races, time trials, an extra world, multiple vehicles, open world, four tiers of in race items, unlockable characters, and an entire second quest… It’s a damn fine game that ive personally grown to love more than the tech demo that was Wave Race 64.

4 player battle arena was amazing, I had one friend who was annoyingly good with the tank and would routinely annihilate us with it, to the point where it was briefly banned in SF64 multiplayer in our group. Same friend showed me how to save Falco in the first mission, effectively unlocking the other half of the game for me. Fun, incredibly quotable campaign. I don’t have the same sentimental attachment to it that I do for, say, the Legend of Zelda games, but I do have a lot of fun memories associated with it.

Ugh, it’s Star Fox 64. I loved it as a kid because it was new and cutting edge and hey rumble pack… but the tone of the SNES original, the music, the character art, they were better than Star Fox 64’s in retrospect.

On top of that, they tried to make Fox look like a realistic fox with that goofy cartoon pattern and mohawk, and it’s just not working for me. The mohawk never worked for me and now it looks even sillier.

It’s a good thing I already laid Nintendo to rest in my heart or seeing this might have hurt a little.
