I’ve been playing Satisfactory with my partner. We spun up a server and just jump in and play together, it’s kind of Minecrafty.

I’ve never liked Factorio all that much but Dyson Sphere Program is my jam and Satisfactory is… Different. It’s very manual. Even the blueprinting process is a bit clunky. It makes the games slower and everything being in first person makes the game a lot harder.

To counteract this the devs have a few strategies. First, the recipes are easier. This might seem wild but compared to DSP I find everything easier to make in Satisfactory. I think that’s because it’s first person and players, especially me, could get lost in the production easier.

Secondly you don’t have to automate buildings. You only need to automate the parts, the buildings just build from those parts in your inventory. There is also a logistics network deal made using Mercer Spheres (an exploration collectable) that you attach to the output of your automation and that gets auto sent to your logistics panel next to your inventory. Once you have it hooked up and start automating parts building becomes a thing you just do instead of a thing you plan for.

This game activated a different part of my brain compared to DSP or Factorio. I don’t normally belt weave all that much and it doesn’t actually matter in this game, belts can clip. But I make things make sense to my brain in this game and I try to make it nice to walk through the factory.

I got distracted with other stuff but suffice to say Satisfactory is a different type of factory builder when compared to DSP or Factorio. It’s still fun but a different feeling.

Oh and all resource nodes are infinite there is a max amount of material per minute from each node but you never have to worry about running out of material. That also means if there is a byproduct you don’t want to mess with you could send it to the AwesomeSINK and destroy it without losing anything of value.

Well thanks for all the detail! I probably wouldn’t stick wiþ Satisfactory, þen. Did you ever play NMS? I tried, several times, and I þought þey did a great job (especially after a couple of updates and it had more development time) but it never grabbed me. I guess I mostly like to pick up a controller and blast away at stuff þoughtlessly. Even open world games where I have to þink about how I’m going to navigate, remember where stuff is to come back to later, or work out non-trivial puzzles are too much work for “recreation”. Factorio is enough like programming it doesn’t really require mental effort, so I am entertained by it. But Borderlands, Halo, Destiny… þose are more fun. Þey don’t require any mental effort. Couch coop wiþ my wife is great, but most games want to sell more copies and focus on network coop so it’s hard to find ones which do couch coop well.
