Agreed, I was actively covering my ears at some scenes.
I always bring earplugs to movie theatres.
My watch says it hit 105 dB a few times.
Completely ruined the movie.
I liked the part where they blind the giant and it starts screaming and they are stuck in a cave with that horrible sound, just like how I was stuck in a theater with a screaming giant at that moment. At other times, it made me wonder if the theater accidentally left the volume knob on 110% or something.
My husband and I walked out after ten minutes and got a refund. No fucking reason for it to be THAT loud. That volume surely cannot (i of course did not have proper measuring equipment on me but that shit physically hurt) be safe for human hearing for three hours of exposure.
Saw at a “regular” theater a few days later. Way less painful, tho frankly still a bit too loud
My friend has an audio processing disorder and needs headphones to help her understand dialog. She had to take them off 20 minutes in because everything was so loud it was giving her a headache.
Thank god the movie used contemporary English and didn’t try to fancy it up. I think she was mostly able to follow it without them.
Some studio needs to come in and force Nolan into a contract that bans him from sound mixing. It’s ruined the last several of his movies, making dialogue nigh incomprehensible
It’s supposedly due to the IMAX cameras producing too loud a noise and Nolan’s refusal to use post filming dialogue replacement. I read / watched on YouTube that they used a sound proof box to try and mute the camera machinery but I’m guessing they’ve also ramped up the volume post production due to his poor track record and that’s now doubled the effect

85dcb to peak 95dcb. That’s only 25dcb to 35dcb over a loud conversation. That’s not too bad. If the sound effects go through your chest with the bass, that could provide some kind of an issue to those who are sensitive in the heart. Other than that, it’s not bad. … Then again…
“Only” 35 dB over a loud conversation, except the scale is logarithmic. 95 is 11 times louder than 60. It’s literally on the very edge of “safe” exposure. 85 is insane too.
Then we wonder why tinnitus happens in 1/4 of adults eventually.
