Agnodice is not generally considered a historical figure, but her legend has influenced discussions about gender roles in medical professions.
I was ready to believe there have always been insecure shitty men. I mean, I still do, but I guess this isn’t solid evidence for it.
Perhaps a better example is in the reverse - during the Late Roman Republic, a woman by the name of Gaia Afrania was so successful in arguing legal cases that it resulted in male lawyers banding together and (successfully) lobbying for women to be barred from arguing the legal cases of others (they could still argue their own legal cases).
Yeah it’s literally a myth story, only Roman, not Greek.
She should have just voted every 4 years and wrote a letter to her senator until women were allowed to be doctors, what a violent radical revolutionary
Don’t worry, Athens didn’t have senators or representatives, so should just would have had to convince a majority of the menfolk individually. Of course, had she tried to do so, probably they would have found some reason to exile, kill her, or worse, marry her off.
Ain’t the past grand?
Hey, Athens were the champion of democracy and human rights of their time. One just had to be a well-off man with both Athenian parents to feel the benefits. 🌚
Seriously have some respect for the law
And then she slept with their wives!
(sorry, its illegal to post something on lemmy that’s insufficiently gay)
They were just pals! Agnodice had a really nice vacation home on the isle of Lesbos, an isle which was renowned for its healing properties, but only for women, curiously*.
*this is not actually part of the lore, just to be clear XD
Dude you beat me to the isle of lesbos joke. Now I gotta work at this
Was it really about ego or was it about market share?
Sounds like my species. Yep. Yeh yeh yeh.
