The mother of an Air Force airman who was fatally shot in the doorway to his home by a Florida sheriff’s deputy said Monday that the deputy’s firing was not justice for her son’s killing.

Chantemekki Fortson spoke at a news conference in Atlanta accompanied by her attorney, Ben Crump, who said the firing of Okaloosa County Deputy Eddie Duran was a “step forward,” but that Duran should also be charged in Senior Airman Roger Fortson’s killing.

Sheriff Eric Aden fired Duran on Friday, about a month after he shot and killed Roger Fortsonwhile responding to a domestic violence call and being directed to Fortson’s apartment.

In addition to saying Duran’s firing isn’t enough, Chantemekki Fortson said it should have happened much sooner.

“Let’s be clear, that is not justice,” she said of the firing. “That’s you thinking you’re throwing me a bone and I’m OK with it. I’m not OK with it. I’m not OK with it.”

Duran shot Fortson, 23, multiple times on May 3, two seconds after he opened his door while legally holding a handgun pointed down, the deputy’s body camera footage shows. Fortson was Black.

As always radio silence from the NRA, the official Russian consulate for American gun manufacturers.

“If they were killing 300 white women a year, you don’t think they’d have the 82nd Airborne down here?”

As a country and species, we need to be open and honest and start facing these issues directly. I agree with this mother’s sentiment.

We won’t because no one gives a shit about black ppl. If we aren’t entertaining the masses we don’t matter. Black ppl have lived in the US 400+ years. If the massed haven’t figured it out yet, it’s because they don’t want to

It seems to me a lot more people give a shit. The one’s that don’t are very vocal rn.

It wasn’t always like that tho, and politicians still only pander to the loud minority of people, that’s why racists get more attention. And that’s not great.

    Qualified immunity needs to end.

Just some context, on average 15k people are killed by others with firearms a year…this excludes suicides. 1,000 of those are from the police. Yea 1 in 15.
