@linuxphones l was wondering about switching over to linux with my smart phone. Would it work equally well like Android ??
It will not work remotely as well as android.
Just to make absolutely sure we’re all on the same page here: You do know that Linux on a smartphone isn’t a simple matter of “switching over”, right?
@Cevilia no, l don’t. I wish to learn about the difference in experience from those who are using Linux on their smartphones.
Just for comparison, here’s someone with a similar question that makes sense, asks detailed questions based on their knowledge and also responds to people in the comments.
@exu thanks for sharing this 😊😊… A cursory glance at the thread actually warned me against trying out such an experiment 🙃🙃🙃
Depends, what’s your smartphone and is it supported by either postmarketOS or ubports? Otherwise you most certainly can’t switch to a linux based os for your smartphone. Best course of action then would be to switch to a different Android Distribution e.g. /e/os or GrapheneOS.
Okay that’s good. Check out the first two links I initially posted and read the docs or go through the tutorials. Linux on phones is mostly a hands on approach, and until you try it you won’t know for sure if it works for you or not.
@DmMacniel l was thinking about uninstalling Android altogether and then installing some linux distro into my mobile phone.
well, ignoring my suggestions and question; good luck then.
Nope.
If you’re talking about switching your current phone to Linux, yeah, idk.
But, if you’re willing to purchase a new device, then the Jolla C2 or the Sony Xperia 10 III apparently run SailfishOS decently.
(I recently ordered an Xperia 10 III from Jolla Devices with SailfishOS. I was hoping it could become my main phone…)
What benefits are you looking to achieve? Basically are you just really interested in getting linux to run on your phone (In a can it run DOOM kind of way)? Or are there specific uses / etc you’re focused on?
TLDR I suspect what you really want is just an open source android OS, not linux persay.
No, why would it?
