It’s basically like a copy of the original repository. But you can pull in and merge changes from the original, make a pull request for the original to pull your changes. Fork+pull request enables you to contribute to someone else’s repository. Things like Chromium are in part forks of Safari, just that they diverged over time.

Also, AI Integration into browsers could very well be a deciding factor for mainstream users when choosing a browser. Might be the out of memory killer. For me, Mach (Firefox’s build tool) usually did a multi-processed build assuming around 1 GB RAM per thread. Run ./mach build -j10 to limit the build to e.g. 10 threads. Or set mk_add_options MOZ_PARALLEL_BUILD=10 in your config file.
