I miss atom, when it was discontinued I tried vscodium and immediately hated it, then used kate for a while, and now use neovim. neovim is nice but atom was just so good

Linux@lemmy.ml•Are there any other display servers aside from Wayland and X11 with its forks?
8·20 小时前There was W, which came before X but I don’t think any copies of it or even authentic screenshots of it are available on the internet.
what confuses me is that i have heard so many people talking about this community but i have never seen it. does lemmy.world block it or something?
not accurate

I started using my own laptop instead of my assigned one like a week after i started and no one cares. I RDP into my work laptop when I occasionally need windows software.
To be fair I am one of 8 people in our IT department so your mileage may vary with this tactic.

Linux@lemmy.ml•[SOLVED] How to set resolution to a portion of a screen or just screen share part of one?
13·20 天前Use OBS to capture your screen and manipulate it however you want and then use its virtual camera feature as your webcam for the meeting. If you want both your face and screen you could easily do a facecam in the corner in obs

Android@lemdro.id•Gboard could soon be able to understand sign language with your phone's cameraEnglish
0·23 天前When would be the time to use sign language instead of typing? With voice recognition you can use it while doing something else with your hands, but what could you be doing that allows signing but not holding your phone? It seems like a good feature I’m just having trouble imagining when specifically you would use it

Linux@lemmy.ml•Modest laptop arriving, what new Linux distribution should I try?
7·25 天前I bought an old laptop to install libreboot on and I’ve been messing with Gentoo. I see the appeal now that I’ve tried it. It took me a couple days to compile librewolf but assuming your laptop isnt from 2013 I imagine things would build a lot faster for you
I’ve never been to england but I know curry is a big thing there and curry massively outranks every food in the comic

PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Consoles continue their trend of just becoming worse PCsEnglish
23·1 个月前But almost everyone already has a laptop, so they don’t need to buy anything new. And if you really need more performance, you could spend the console budget on an external GPU for your laptop.
I guess if your only current computer is ARM or you have a low end chromebook it could make sense?

PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Consoles continue their trend of just becoming worse PCsEnglish
9·1 个月前I guess that makes sense if you already have one. I don’t see why anyone would buy a console for the first time now though. My 13 inch laptop is just as portable as a modern handheld console and if I had a TV it would be easier to just connect my laptop than deal with an extra device.
Plus there are thousands of PC exclusive games spanning over 40 years plus basically every console exclusive before the current generation via emulators vs what maybe a hundred exclusive to current consoles?

51·1 个月前Plus steam DRM is easy to remove if you want a drm-less copy. I keep backups of old versions of my games playable this way
For games, just about anything that isnt intentionally made to not work in wine works. For other things, it really depends on the program. You can usually look up online if anyone has gotten your specific program to work unless its really obscure
Yeah I’m perfectly happy with my flac files from bandcamp. If I really want a CD I can burn one
I’m like the only one I know with an optical drive in my computer and its not even a bluray drive. Maybe if they distributed on like USB drives? but that seems expensive
