Okay that’s actually cool as fuck and also totally appropriate.

1·13 hours agoIts documentation is wonderful.
Unfortunately, reading documentation is often enough of an obstacle that it’s still off-putting to people (which is absolutely silly of course… it’s just reading). Fewer people like to actually read long documentation than we think, which I took as part of the joke here.

1·13 hours agoYeah, GPU passthrough is pretty tough to get with VMs as well, let alone something very tailored to graphics needs like that. So I can understand if you need that to work why it’s a turn off.
Well, VMs being slower than the host machine is just a real tradeoff that happens. You can try using less graphics/ram/cpu heavy systems like Xubuntu/Lubuntu (although to be fair even Kubuntu is pretty lightweight now). But part of it is how much RAM you give it. If you have the spare ram for it, give it as much as you can. I have 32gb of ram and yet rarely break using 10gb of it so if I am running a single VM I usually give it 12gb of ram at minimum. Also depending on what you’re using for your VM you could give the VM more cpu cores to use, but that will in turn speed it up (although depending on the load may also slow down your host as it loses access to cores). Giving it enough ram, enough cores, and putting it on the next M.2 (pulling the OS of an HDD is slow af) you get if there’s enough room. Those are all things that will bring up speed.

2·9 hours agookay, well, your root directory is always
/that’s where your system stuff lives like/usr//bin//etc/et cetera. however, you also have in there alongside the system stuff a /home/ directory, which is where your user data lives. Think of/home/as yourC:\Users\folder. It’s where whatever your username and its data is is going to live. The thing is, when installing the OS, you can choose to set up (manually) to have your
/home/directory on another disk or disk partition, which separates it from the root/directory psychically or logically respectively. It would be like if you could re-install windows entirely but never lose your
C:\Users\folder because it actually lived atD:\Users\and Windows just always looked for your users folder upon install (which Ubuntu does) and allows you to re-use it if it finds it.So:\
/=C:\
/home/=C:\Users\These aren’t 1 to 1 matches in terms of analogy, but it’s pretty close.

2·14 hours agoPossibly the best advice here re: the distro.
While it helps to have people give you suggestions, the person who it really needs to work for is you, the user. Don’t let popular opinion turn you away from what works for you, OP. Experiment and play. It costs nothing to put on a new system except some time and effort.
Also, if you put your home/ directory on its own partition, you can experiment with variations of the same types, like the all the variations of Ubuntu. I’m pretty sure modern installers even back up the dotfiles that exist in your current home/ directory for you, so you don’t even have to worry about old dotfiles breaking anything.

66·15 hours ago…and is yet more evidence that the old branding was atrocious and they need to drop this childish “tee hee we made a sex joke” about a scene from an overrated movie from the 90s.
I hate this aspect of open source, and the giggling, crass immaturity of a mass number of men within the open source community.
I figured something like that, I just like the idea of Yogi Bear making buildings shaped like a pic-a-nic basket, thus the dumb joke.

222·15 hours agoI wasn’t familiar with paint.net so I went looking and this stood out to me:
It has been compared to other digital photo editing software packages such as Adobe® Photoshop®, Corel® Paint Shop Pro®, Microsoft Photo Editor, and The GIMP.
This is on their main page, in the main description of what paint.net is and what it does. Whatever happened to that fork of GIMP that dropped the fucking atrocious branding.
This right here is an example of why it’s bad, because this chump gets to get away with making a reference to the idea of a sexual “gimp.” It’s been a bad name for a long time now.
I get that rebrands are hard but fuck me, adding the word “The” before it makes it seem so crass and worthless in comparison to the other things in the list which aren’t given skeevy fucking nicknames.
You’re allowing people not directly involved in the project to fucking make it look weird and creepy by keeping the fucking name.
I’m tired.
/end of only semi-related rant, please excuse me
I didn’t know Yogi Bear owned property!

31·14 hours agoWhat are your PC specs outside of an Nvidia card?
Depending on your specs, it might make more sense to run it in a Virtual Machine than dual boot.
I started my process of going into Linux with dual-booting for several years while also running a small linux server on a raspberry pi 3B+.
The reality is I hardly ever booted into Linux unless I needed to do something over there. Several times I ignored the Linux side long enough that it was fully broken from not receiving updates for so long. (Literally slept on the upgrade window until the next upgrade was already out and the old upgrade window was gone…ooof. after that I went with LTS just to ensure that didn’t happen again).
Part of the reason I never booted into it is because turning it off and then on again… is actually more time consuming and interruptive than you initially think. I would just forget it was there on a normal day without any specific projects to work on.
I never really took it properly seriously until I fully removed Windows and made my Linux my daily driver. If I still need Windows, I run that in a Virtual Machine. However the amount of times I need it is steadily decreasing.
So, based on personal experience, if you have the specs, I strongly suggest a VM otherwise you might find yourself not even bothering to boot into Linux half the time because everything you do daily is still on Windows. Just a thought nugget to consider. Plenty of people told me I should be running mine in a VM that whole time, too. I was skeptical. Looking back, they were right, and it took me longer to acclimate than it would have if I had been consistently using it.

15·15 hours agoI worked in local television news media for a decade in the early 2000’s.
It’s worse than that: we just don’t even teach these people how to be actual journalists.
I remember working in production, catching a new, state-level important story, with court documents proving as much. I printed it and put it on the desk of several reporters. The producer refused to run the story because they “didn’t see the story on the AP Newswire.” In other words they refused to run the story until a major network ran it first. Three weeks later they ran the story after someone else ran it first.
Recall, I worked in production. I wasn’t a newsie. I had better news instincts than these fucking clowns who went to school for it.
It’s just rubes saying “yes daddy I’ll do whatever you tell me” all the way down.

5·15 hours agoThe alternatives are the left under a very unpopular candidate and the right under an extremely unpopular candidate.
Oof, so you’re about to enter the arena the US did in 2016, huh? Reminds me of Clinton vs. Trump.
(Not to say that Mrs. Clinton is in any way a “leftist” politician but Democrats get a pass as being “left” because of our abysmal education over here. The thread is that they were both deeply disliked by large sections of the voting populace, leading to even worse outcomes.)
The French political class is absolutely terrified of increasing taxes on the wealthy, because it is afraid wealthy people will leave the country en masse. It is the only realistic way out of the mess, though.
I guess all the new rich people moving into New York City isn’t enough proof to them that the wealthy actually like where they live and their whole “we’ll pull up and leave!” is the biggest load of horseshit.
ALSO I would love for these governments just to fucking call that bullshit for what it is, and if they try to fucking leave because of taxes take every fucking penny and piece of property they own in your country and tell them to get fucked and figure it out when they get where they’re going but they’re not taking the wealth they built in this country with them.

5·16 hours agoIt’s due to the cult of individualism and a media-ecosystem that re-enforces the “only a single strong man can save the world” idea with endless superhero movies, TV shows, and the like. Doesn’t even have to be superheroes, honestly. Anything where magically problems are solved by the actions of one person.
It has everyone in this mode where they won’t organize not only because they don’t know how but because the lone-hero narrative is so deeply ingrained in the culture (going as far back as The Lone Ranger) that Americans struggle to think outside that narrative. “Organizing” is literally a foreign concept to 99% of us.
Source: Am American. I try to talk about parallel systems and building new governance from the bottom up but literally all anyone wants to do is “buy guns” like that solves anything. Organizing just to take care of each other is too big of an ask apparently, let alone organizing to risk your life for the betterment of society. We can’t even get organized when there isn’t a functional risk to society.
EDIT: Also my personal pet conspiracy theory is that “group projects” in elementary and high school are designed to make people think working in groups is pointless since it’s a group grade and one person can just bail on doing anything… Yeah, because we incentivize bailing as a culture. I wonder why kids are so primed to do it.

35·17 hours agoThe state views inability to control it’s populace as a “failure” because the states we have enabled to become our modern governance have stopped actually giving a shit about their actual constituents and consistently roll out the red carpet for the rich and corrupt. Loss of control is a failure, real democracy is a failure. The real issue is they clearly (and the media as well) don’t have the same goals as the people they lord over.

15·17 hours agoSounds a lot like protests in the USA. Minneapolis remembers black umbrella man setting the AutoZone on fire, giving the cops a chance to regroup, and became something the media focused on and it wasn’t proven he was a white supremacist agitator until later… and the news had moved on by that point and that was mostly only covered by smaller publications. New York Times wasn’t about to give an expose about how right wing agitators helped the police have a police riot. Not once did our media refer to it as a “police riot” even though beating the living shit out of angry citizens because you murdered an innocent is a police riot.

Beyond such an outfit, such an aura. I want to melt short trans kings like this while I tower over them. Getting close, grabbing their chin in my hand, gripped at their cheeks, saying “let me get a better look at you” and pulling his head side to side before loosening my grip, running my hand back behind their head, pulling it closer, playing with their hair, guiding my thumb around the edge of their ear… 😈 sorry got a lil carried away there.
