It reminds me of a popular misconception about Earth and our atmosphere and climate.

A lot of the people who advocate for the environment believe that reduction in trees will jeopardize our oxygen and that we’ll run out of breathable air at some point.

The problem is actually that trees capture and hold carbon, the danger to the environment is almost strictly just the release of excess carbon.

If we lost every last tree and phytoplankton bloom in the world, we would still have enough breathable oxygen to last potentially thousands or hundreds of thousands of years, with some estimates depending on a lot of complex factors, saying that some level of of population density could stay alive for millions of years.

Media has fallen off a cliff in the last few years. Nobody but some of the older, more respected institutions do anything but publish rage-bait, pandering nonsense and clickbait headlines and filler stories meant to get grabbed by algorithms in content aggregation social media sites so they get traffic. We all know this, and we move on. We cannot change how we got here, we cannot undo the harm of the past by changing our language. Marijuana is not used to signal anything or to harm anyone, UNLESS YOU MAKE IT.

It’s absolutely not the same, one word offends a lot of people broadly because it signals how you feel about them, and the other doesn’t do that, the other is a word that people of all races and backgrounds use and is never used as a signal from people to show how they feel about a race or minority group, at least not in the modern world. I don’t know if anyone is saying it’s “killing” the business, but if your bosses are telling you that it hasn’t been harmed, they are lying to you. This is normal, even in a company you love, your bosses will lie to their employees about the state of the business, right up until the day they suddenly surprise you and say sales have crashed and they have to cut back their workforce, it’s as normal in business as business itself.

And nobody is moralizing anything here, so I don’t get the defensiveness, if people rather do cannabis than alcohol, that’s a reflection of social trends towards a substance that is less harmful and less apt to cause hangovers and regrettable texts. McConnel introduced this portion of the bill and he’s well known to be “sponsored” by big alcohol companies, who have been seeing declining sales ever since cannabis legalization so it’s not hard to see what’s going on.

The timing is great as I learn my healthcare premiums are likely to go up by over a thousand dollars a month.

(McConnel introduced this anti-THC amendment and he’s known to have deep ties to alcohol lobbies, and alcohol sales in the US are flagging hard since decriminalization of weed.)
