For all the bogosities and bullshit of Element/Matrix, fact is it’s still the only protocol and platform I trust for private comms.
I said the business model is not inherently deceptive. Doesn’t mean bad actors still won’t try to deceive.
I’m fine with these companies charging to use their service, as long as they respect privacy rights in the process. I wouldn’t pay for it just the same. But at least that model isn’t inherently deceptive.
The issue is that Google locks down the bootloader. Nothing prevents the compute and display hardware from running a traditional Linux distribution, but that “trusted” bootloader does.
Buy a Xiao MI band and run GadgetBridge. There are other fitness watches it supports too, but the Xiao MI band is cheap and good enough. GadgeBridge stores all data locally and you won’t send your health data to China for analysis.

Google’s statement is somewhat hyperbole in comparison to physical addiction. But Google is abusing their position and market dominance. Antitrust enforcement is warranted.
Almost all commercial software is better designed and has a better interface than any FOSS project.
I say this having used FOSS since the late 1980s. Back then, it was EMACS on Sun or HP workstations.
But…
FOSS preserves privacy. Any business that uses commertial software tools which leaks private data to their competitors because of data mining just shot themselves in the foot.
If you’re a business, you can train your staff to use FOSS. And if you do, your business plans remain private.
I’m having a lot of trouble with it. Doesn’t run my commercial apps (that do run on 20.04) and it crashes regularly on dual my GPU setup.
