(Hopefully this fits here)English7·17 days agoI’m going to mention SLSKD if you’re at all into self hosting. I run that on a crap laptop at home, and can access it via wireguard/tailscale, then from my phone handle adding new downloads. This is borderline a required feature for me because I learn about a lot of music via word of mouth and being able to go grab it on the spot is great functionality.

Arkhive@piefed.blahaj.zoneto Books@lemmy.ml•Non-military space opera recomendationsEnglish1·18 days agoYeah! I think the Firefly example dialed it in for me. I know Star Wars also get called that, but both get sorted under “space western” in my mind, so I was never really clear on the exact use of space opera. Would things like Enders Game or even Dune technically count?? Like those are political dramas at a point. Enders game is maybe a bit simplified, but Dune has heavy character development with the backdrop of Arrakis and the technology required for survival.
Arkhive@piefed.blahaj.zoneto Books@lemmy.ml•Non-military space opera recomendationsEnglish1·18 days agoAh yes, Firefly, that does clarify the genre well. I’d say the series “technically” counts, but the writing style is definitely not for everyone.
Arkhive@piefed.blahaj.zoneto Books@lemmy.ml•Non-military space opera recomendationsEnglish2·18 days agoI’m not super clear on what genre space opera is exactly, but The Locked Tomb trilogy might fit the bill??
Haven’t watched contrapoints in a long time, but I used to like the channel for the most part. What are the stupid takes you speak of?
Arkhive@piefed.blahaj.zoneto Technology@lemmy.world•DM me on Spotify: Spotify launches a messaging feature.English4·18 days agoSpotify’s payment model also adds a ton of bias to their suggestions. Artists need to hit a threshold number of listens a month to get paid at all, so Spotify ends up just suggesting music from artists they are already paying, rather than letting other folks hit that threshold. It’s also why the “shuffle” feature never actually shuffles a whole playlist before starting to repeat songs. If you really pay attention the songs that get repeated by the shuffle algorithm are the ones from bigger artists to try and keep smaller groups from getting paid at all.
Arkhive@piefed.blahaj.zoneto Technology@lemmy.world•DM me on Spotify: Spotify launches a messaging feature.English25·18 days agoPlease let this be your sign to start ditching corporate platforms across the board. Enshitification will come for your pristine app experience eventually. Go spend your Spotify monthly bill on one album every month from bandcamp or something. Own your own media. Share it with friends. GET OFF CORPO AD PLATFORMS! I realize this is the fediverse, so people are already kind of on board, but I think music streaming is often given a pass, or sneaks by our focus when discussing these issues.

I like it because of the issues it relates to and seeing people care about anti-corpo tech. If it was super colorful and chaotic I’d still love it! I can link you directly to the post if you like. I thought it would be mirrored on Al Jazeera’s site, but it was only posted on insta :/

Came here to say the same thing.
Yeah I’ve wrestled with this. Whenever I post I often get in my head trying to think of the “lowest common denominator” type user. One who will make a scene, or report, for things most of our user base would be fine with. Like I could see someone who doesn’t react well to autism being used in humor or something like that. Do I at all agree with that, no, not really, but as one of the mods I think of it like saving myself (mostly others because I’m often slow on the draw for checking reports tbh) potential future work. I’ll untag this tho. I think if I instead have someone complaining about being too heavy handed with the tag I can not worry about folks on the other end of that.
Not everyone appreciates the language choice, so I figured I tag it. Relatively tame compared to most stuff that gets tagged here, but couldn’t hurt.
