Replies were bombarded with harassment and enbyphobia, trotting out the usual, “Why did you say their? Is she a group?” talking point, like a wall of Buzz Lightyear toys repeating their stock phrase. Others ask how to un-back the project, some describe the announcement as a “threat,” and then come the usual buzzwords: Erika Ishii is a “toxic activist,” a “woke idiot,” “Antifa terrorist,” and a few blatantly racist descriptors we obviously won’t repeat here. Understandably, Double Fine turned off the comments.
Yup. Noticed this with plenty of “fans” opening thread after thread of hateful drivel on Steam forums, e.g. for Paralives. These people are clearly not interested in the game. Some even confessed to having been incited by alt-right streamers.
I’m no more likely to read Steam forums than X for the most part. The only exception is if a post comes up as a search result when I’m troubleshooting some issue with a game, and even then it’s an odds-on chance it’ll be useless. Otherwise, stay away!
Oh I got excited for a moment thinking the cancelled paradox sims game got made after all, but it’s a different one. Is it good? What’s the controversy anyway, did they allow creating characters that conservatives don’t find attractive or something?
It’s a very barebones and buggy game right now. Might want to give it another year or two before buying, since it can’t even hope to compete with “the” life sim at the moment, let alone stand on its own feet. Right now, it’s just a foundation upon which a good game could be built.
As for the controversy, there isn’t one, of course, apart from manufactured nonsense. The usual “outrage” about the game allowing players to create people that exist in real life, but that conservatives want to kill.
Yeah, zero chance people like that were actually going to play paralives to begin with.
Not too long ago, I ended up randomly on one of those “curator” lists where they review basically everything in terms of wokeness. You know, so you can buy responsibly or something. That shit is hilarious.
Like half of the “nope” have no reason but “there’s gay marriage in it”, but wait, Skyrim has that too… “Err yeah, but we like that one so, it’s okay. For… reasons.”
And I remember one game getting a “Not Recommended” with the only line in the whole review being “In the trailer, you can see a man who’s knitting”.
