We do not officially support Linux and we cannot commit to having support for launch. We are still working on Official Linux Proton compatibility.
This official stance has not changed since pre-release.
We admit there was a mistake in communication by our CM which was unfortunetly screenshotted in our Discord and then posted on the linux Reddit, when the official stance has always been ‘we are working on proton compatibility’.
Any previous Alpha/Beta test where Linux worked was by happen stance, which led to some users discuss the game as being Linux compatible. However, as previously stated - we do not yet officially support Linux and we are still working on our proton support for WARDOGS. We will update our stance once we have this confirmed. That is our goal.
We cannot commit to having Linux support for our Early Access launch. So please, refund the game if you mistakenly bought it thinking you would be able to run Linux via Proton on September 10th. We hope to have you back as soon as we can confirm official compatibility.
We know this is not what you want to hear… but the continued demand for Linux has been heard and it is still in our sights. Thankyou.
Damn, I was looking forward to this. Good on them for making an effort to support it in the future though.
Majority of games don’t officially support Linux but yet they work fine with Proton, while occasionally requiring tweaks, while its appreciated that they’re aiming for Proton support in actuality developers should be aiming for a native Linux build with Vulkan instead of DX11/12.
One issue with not officially supporting Linux is, one day a perfectly playable game could be unplayable or just start actively blocking Linux. Happened to me with a few games before, such as Apex Legends. So this is not just a temporary state until Proton updates or me doing tweaks, it is impossible now. On the other hand, we have success stories such as Marvel Rivals, where the developers officially support the online multiplayer game with Proton, even notes on the updates to fix an issue with Proton.
Beggars can’t be choosers
Linux gamers aren’t beggers. We are the players and customers and can choose where we spent our time and money. There is so much to play, that I’m not begging a company, I just lookup where I can spent my resources.
This is great! I really appreciate the openness and transparency towards this issue. That means they don’t ignore us, and are honest so we can plan ahead. Still little bit sad they do not support Linux. Having said that, I don’t care about this particular game. just wish every company would at least clear things up like them.
This Elytra anti-cheat must be so good.
It worked fine on Linux, but the game needs more time to cook.

They added new anti-cheat so it no longer works until they enable it again.

I don’t think they can flick a switch to enable this one, but I think Embark themselves are looking into getting it working much like developers can with EAC.
Isn’t that the same anti-cheat on arc raiders?
I’m not sure? Didn’t that start off with EAC? Perhaps I’m getting confused with the Finals?

Embark Studios runs a three-layer defense: Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) at the kernel level, Anybrain AI for behavioral analysis, and an automatic loot-return system called Abnormal Match Compensation.
ah good to know. I think they’ll be switching to eyltra later on, given it’s their in house solution. glad they’re looking at supporting Linux though.
Popular 3 and 4 year old games are still getting nerfed, buffed, and are receiving performance patches. It’s a different world now.
I’m finding the apologies and the “just refund the game” messaging from the devs becoming a little annoying at this point. I get they’re being transparent and accountable for their fuckups (which is good!), but it would be nice if they just got their shit together and stopped fucking up.
It’s like if I accidentally stepped on your toes, apologized, then I accidentally knocked over your coffee, apologized again, and finally I accidentally broke your mug, and apologized once more. And each time I apologized, I offered you the opportunity to breakup our friendship together.
They claim to be pro Linux but then they just deleted the Linux channel in their discord.
I refunded my pre-order and I hope this game dies off when GTA 6 releases and takes over twitch.
The linux channel in there was a shit hole, in fairness. Constant bickering and trolling.
