World News@lemmy.world•Mosquitoes found in Iceland for first time as climate crisis warms countryEnglish
8·23 days agoYeah, probably this. And the increase in temperature simply made the conditions bearable when they got outside.
Could they have also maybe just… flown over there? Insect migrations like this can happen, but I don’t think it’s possible on such a scale, even for mosquitoes.

0·1 month agoCurrently they’re not close at all to being daily drivers (can speak from experience as I’ve flashed Ubuntu Touch onto a phone a few days ago), but their development has sped up a lot lately, so here’s to hoping for the best!
A bit late to the party here, but today I flashed Ubuntu Touch onto a Xiaomi Poco X3, and it’s… well, it’s rough.
All the base functionality seems to be there, calls should work (not sure because I didn’t test them extensively), sms works, location/gps works, nfc is supported, camera is… passable, battery life is certainly, and noticeably worse but that’s a given - when on standby, the battery goes down roughly 8% every 5 hours, so approx. 27% per day on standby.
While I’m really glad to see how much Linux phone development sped up, they are still nowhere near daily driver status - even the phones built with Linux support in mind are not faring well from what I’ve seen. Even then, I’m keeping this Poco X3 because Android’s days seem to be numbered.

Superbowl@lemmy.world•Neck Cramps Hit Different When You're an Owl
2·2 months agoI know, right? I tried cutting one in half with a knife and it was like trying to cut a nylon belt with a butter knife - virtually impossible, and the lil guy didn’t even feel it!

Superbowl@lemmy.world•Neck Cramps Hit Different When You're an Owl
2·2 months agoHonestly no clue. I’ve seen the term on the bug’s Wikipedia page first, and it stuck with me since.
I’ve looked into the word itself a bit and interestingly it seems like it’s only ever used to refer specifically to the Hippoboscidae family. Weird name for a shoe brand 😅
And yeah, perfectly engineered is just about the best way to describe them. Their exoskeletons are crazy strong - no amount of stomping will kill them, and I mean that wholeheartedly. One time I had to burn one to a crisp with a lighter because I had no other choice, and the little guy didn’t want to leave my house.

Superbowl@lemmy.world•Neck Cramps Hit Different When You're an Owl
2·2 months agoI hate these little guys! Or at least a relative of them - the deer ked (Lipoptena cervi).
Very well adapted to their environment to the point of impressiveness, so I do have respect for them, but that doesn’t change the fact that they’re so hard to remove from clothing! At least most of them don’t bother with biting into humans.
I think compatibility was also being taken into account here. When not looking at compatibility, JXL is the best hands down. It’s criminal how little software supports it.

Ayep. I have an unlocked Mi 10T Pro and I honestly would be scared of attempting to unlock another Xiaomi phone right now. It was already difficult enough those couple of months ago, I can’t imagine how bad it is now.
Fiddling with Mi Unlock itself took hours out of my day. Installing random older versions, not being able to select something because some UI element couldn’t get out of the way, and so on.

aye, i feel ya. losing even a part of your senses is extremely depressing.
lost a part of mine when i blew myself up with a pistol flare by accident back in February. my hearing’s never been quite right since, and to top it all off i’ve still got scars from the incident on my left hand.
i’ve made a much better recovery than i thought i would, but my right ear still has some slight tinnitus which will likely stay with me til the grave.
i really hope you recover just as well if not more! at least eye damage is infinitely more reversible than ear damage!

Ah, fair enough. To be fair a good couple of spider species were able to cross continents via ballooning, so now that I think about it, mosquitoes doing just as well isn’t too far fetched.
