  • This was a scam from the start. They fucked themselves because their trailer was popular and they promised the world. Their goal was to create a shit early access game with pre-made assets, get lots of buy in when it was released, endure some bad reviews, promise to fix things but then slowly dump support for the game. I’ve watched this exact thing happen probably ten times now.

What killed them was the hype and popularity. They were called out immediately for what they were doing and got stuck having to now make an actual game or face legal repercussions.

At the very least these cash grabs are getting spotted early and they’re not getting to sneak by without facing consequences.

  • Frankly I don’t care. The US wastes trillions of dollars on military spending. We have the most advanced military in the world by a mile but all too often it ends up using it to defend someone else’s financial interests or to pad the pockets of people that make their money through a war economy.

Russia can get fucked. Every cent spent on the defense of Ukraine is a fully realized fuck you to our enemy. Ukraine did what we could never do. They essentially removed Russia from the equation. Yeah they have many poorly maintained nukes but they know we will fuck their ass if they touch them. They will not be posing a real threat to anyone for generations.

We aren’t spending this money on the American people and we never were going to do that anyway. Our choices are we fund people actually fighting for their life or we allow that money to get sucked into the military industrial complex for no real return. They’re already getting theirs out of this, the only question that remains is do you back Republicans that have made up a nothing burger about this money because they’ve arbitrarily decided this is the 96th hill they’ll die on, or do you you want to see the money you pay in taxes actually get put to a meaningful purpose.

  • Starfield is just a mess. I think Todd assumed he could ride the Skyrim goodwill into the sunset with his subsequent games because he’s consistently failed to deliver since then. I love the jank of a good Bethesda game because at its heart you have a true rpg that lets you roam and complete quests how you see fit. Starfield removed the roaming and the exploration and left some very mediocre storytelling and quests in its wake. Without that magic you’re just left with increasingly awful jank that can’t be ignored.

Thank god for Xbox game pass, I was only out about 15 dollars and was able to try the game without committing 70 dollars.

  • For starters the decentralized nature of lemmy means no one person or group can control the narrative. An instance with good moderators can remove bad actors and there’s no good way for a large group to get a footing and spew bullshit to everyone.

The best part is those bad actors get to still be a part of the larger picture, can still engage with each other if they choose, they just cease to have any impact on everyone else. I believe I remember reading about how when the red pill q anons moved in and got mass defederated they complained because it’s just no fun to be a troll if the only people they can talk to is each other.

It’s why we as a global society need to swap to this platform and ditch twitter. He’s literally making it so verified accounts can set it so only other verified accounts can respond. The only idiots with blue check marks are racist conspiracy dickhead trolls. If we are going to continue to call that place the sort of global commons, we are fucked.

Decentralized networks with strong moderation tools are the only future for the internet that isn’t a cesspool of shit. Right now big corps fear this adoption because they cease to be able to buy their way into whatever they want. I do hope one day to see lemmy and mastodon spread further and gain a true foothold, we as a species must have this if we even remotely stand a chance of not spiraling into madness.

  • I’ve been tracking the comments on all of this across various websites to see what people’s thoughts are. This genuinely might be the most contentious issue of our age. There are people who are vehemently pro Palestine and can dismiss the loss of civilian lives as’ what do you expect when people are pushed like this’ . Then others are hugely pro Israel and see this as an unprovoked attack by a terrorist group and any retaliation is justified.

I think everyone’s shitty here. Hamas is a terrorist organization. They use terrorist practices and target civilians. That’s a terrorist organization. There’s no discussion on that point. Israel is a right wing authoritarian state that regularly commits war crimes. The total Palestinian body count far exceeds the death toll from this attack by orders of magnitude so we can’t pretend like Israel was minding its own business and was attacked.

I don’t think you can point to one or the other as being the true hero or the true victim. It’s the greatest grey area of all time.

I absolutely condemn the Palestinians and Hamas for this act. I absolutely condemn the Israelis for their continued mistreatment and violence towards Palestinians. One will say they only act this way because of the behavior of the other. But at this point where does the original blame for all of it start and end.

The only thing that is certain is that there will be far more blood shed and every dead Israeli will be met with 10 dead Palestinians. I suspect this will be the turning point for this ongoing conflict. And in the future there may no longer be a Palestine as we know it. With the US protecting Israel no other Arab countries will dare intervene militarily. If the Israelis occupy Gaza it’s going to quickly become a quagmire with a never ending insurgency. It will be costly and in ten years Israel will be more unsafe then they were today.

There’s no good answers or good parties here. Just disgusting human nature and the consequences of half baked racist geopolitics from the 40s.

  • It’s Hollywood. Think about how we now know like every major rockstar from the 70s thru the 90s was openly having sex with teenagers. Now look at what we have uncovered about the rape based economy of movies and tv. These guys were raping men women and children with impunity for decades. It’s no wonder that their films would reflect that.

Up till now and likely still today, if you wanted to be successful in hollywood you weren’t getting a seat at the table until they got exactly what they wanted. Try to resist and watch as your career went up in flames. Ashley Judd remembers.

It’s not surprising at all that this time period was all just an extension of that. Working child rape into movies was just them expressing themselves.

  • Just do a deep dive on all the super Fucking uncomfortable 80s and 90s tv shows and movies where it’s totally acceptable for an adult to have a sexual encounter with a child. It’s sold as a gag or the adult ‘ struggles with their urges’ or whatever. Totally normal, haha funny.

Imagine if there were a movie like Leon the professional that featured a gay man or a transgender person. The world would lose its mind and string up the director for child abuse.

I’m in full support of lgbt characters that are ‘normalized’ and treated like everyone else. It’s such a non issue it’s crazy to me that it’s even a concern in anyone’s mind.

  • Would anyone like to run a statistical analysis of the number of gay characters that have been present in Disney movies, or really movies in general?

They’re forcing gay characters on us! Help I’m being oppressed! Chill the Fuck out and watch literally 99 percent of all movies that have ever been made if you’re worried about being underrepresented.

Let’s sit down and watch all of the movies that feature a white savior ‘knowing what’s best’ for poor and minority characters. Look at their unbridled altruism! They don’t have to associate with those pesky poors but they choose to do it on account of their saintliness! Get the fuck outta here.

The problem is that it’s extremely difficult to tease out what the impact is when pretty much everyone is exposed to it and has it in their system. Are there connections between these chemicals and autism or cancer? We are just starting to see the preliminary data on the subject.

For me it’s a matter of not being interested in waiting to find out 30 years down the road. My personal belief is that there is no such thing as food safe plastic and especially not when it’s heated or stored for long periods. I believe that there is and will continue to be a concerted effort to downplay any uncovered impact and to ensure till the last second that no steps are taken to regulate the billion dollar plastics/ manufacturing industry. The spice must flow just as the plastics must flow.

Maybe that’s a bit too far in the conspiracy theory vein but name a more iconic duo than large corporations and covering up known flaws and risks for the sake of profit. If nothing else I do not think you lose anything by shifting to glass and certain metals for cooking and storing food. And steps have to be taken to minimize exposure to food packaging that is sprayed with pfas. Looking at you, literally all fast food packaging.

Couple these revelations with what we know about hyper processed foods and it’s no wonder why so many Americans are dumb as Fuck and have so many health problems. We are being poisoned because of our insistence on convenience. We literally have great options for all of these things that are more sustainable and less toxic but we still can’t be inconvenienced by a paper wrapper on a hamburger that might end up a little wet on the ride home.

Of course even with all these steps there’s only so much one can do when you’re literally inhaling plastic from the atmosphere. But it’s certainly a move in the right direction.

  • Well I wouldn’t say that exactly. GTA 5 had a huge budget and a huge team and it’s objectively a better product if you compare the two (which is only to say they’re both great games but the bigger budget game has and does more).

It’s a matter of the motivations of the developers and their financial backers. If your goal is to make an ok game that maximizes profit focused mechanics, most of these AAA developers are hitting the mark perfectly. If your focus is to make a good game like it seemed to be with the BG devs, they absolutely hit the mark and are being rewarded for it.

This is just a reminder to an industry that is trying to tell us that pay to win mechanics are the standard that they do not in fact get to dictate what those standards are. We do. If a game is shit people will abandon it even if you poured millions into that product. The recent battlefield game is a prime example of this. Even something as guaranteed as a new battlefield game isn’t enough to overcome a shitty leadership team emphasizing the wrong things. The community bailed on their product and they’ll never get them back. All those millions in guaranteed revenue are gone forever.
