This is the most comprehensive analysis of the Threads situation that I have seen to far. I recommend giving it a read.

Yeah really, excellent article!

I feel like I’ve learned more about Meta through this discussion than in the previous decade! Pretty concerning. Hope my instance blocks it 🤞🤞🤞

The fediverse owes Erin ( @kissane@mas.to ) a journalism award. Excellent stuff in the past and easily the best voice I’ve read on this new Threads issue.

It’s been a wild week or so watching people who I thought hated centralized social networks because of the harm they do giddily celebrating the entry into the fediverse of a vast, surveillance-centric social media conglomerate credibly accused of enabling targeted persecution and mass murder.

What I cannot make sense of is the belief that any particular implementation of open networking is such an obvious, uncomplicated, and overwhelming good that it’s sensible and good to completely set aside the horrors in Meta’s past and present to celebrate exciting internet milestones.

    Fucking amen!

My personal take (which I’ve made previously elsewhere) is that this unmitigated belief in the good of the protocol/fediverse is lizard Silicon Valley tech bro culture bleeding out across the world convincing all the Fedi devs and admins that their thing making it big is an unqualified success and good.
